So your thinking of buying a DVD recorder. Personally I would not - just yet, prices are still too high and the technology is still young. Just think about the DVD player - a few years ago they were hundreds of pounds - now you can pick one up in most supermarkets for around £30 !

Of course the decision is yours at the end of the day, but before you make that final decision do you want a DVD recorder that records onto DVD discs (cheaper models) or a more expensive model that records direct on to its own hard drive?

But one final word before you spend your hard earned cash - take a quick look at the Archos AV420, an MP4 player , or a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) or Video Jukebox - depending on your terminology. In short it is like an iPod but plays movies. Briefly it will do most things you want a DVD Recorder to do if you have access to a PC & the correct software (not difficult to get). You can record TV/Sky direct on to it or download/upload on your computer (rip DVD's). So if your really trying to keep up with the Jetsons take a look at this little gizmo - you can take this one outside to show off. It comes with its own built in 20gb hard drive which is approx 10 full lenght movies or 50,000 photo images or 75 hrs of music. All for just over £300. Of course the unit will not play actual DVD discs - so take a quick trip to the supermarket or spend an extra £30 on Amazon for a DVD player.

The Archos AV420 20GB MP3/MP4 Player/Recorder with Video Cradle (TV Recording Docking Staion)   

There is an 80g model available- AV480, but reviews are bad for this model most seem to be a hard disc problem, which is surprising considering the hard drives are by Hitachi. Presumably the unit cannot handle 80g or it is a software issue. Incidentally even the USA seems to be having problems with the 80g model so it must be universal.
